What We're Growing This Year at Franklin & Co. Flower Farm
Spring, Early Summer, and Summer Blooms to Look Forward To
As the snow melts and we start to feel hints of warmth in the air, we’re buzzing with excitement here on the farm! Why? Because it’s almost time to start filling our fields with blooms and this year's lineup is nothing short of dreamy.
We’ve been planning, seed starting, and soil prepping for months, and I thought it would be fun to give you a peek at what we’ll be growing this spring and summer. Whether you’re a flower lover, a future bouquet subscriber, or just cheering us on from afar, here’s what you can expect to see growing at Franklin & Co. Flower Farm this season.
As I write this, we are currently 7 weeks away from our last frost date so the countdown is officially on in our Zone 3 garden.
We strategically planned out each and every flower variety and succession planting date so that we can maximize our short growing season and bring you the most beautiful blooms for as long as possible.
Let's dive right into what is growing at Franklin & Co. Flower Farm this year.
SPRING BLOOMS
These are the flowers that shake off the winter blues and kick off our growing season in the most beautiful way.
Tulips – These classic spring darlings are bold, elegant, and come in the dreamiest range of colours, from soft pinks and creamy whites to deep purples and apricots. We’re growing several specialty varieties that make stunning early bouquets. We planted 5,000 of these beauties in the fall of 2024 and we can't wait for them to make their show stopping appearance.
Ranunculus – With their ruffled, tissue paper petals and soft romantic vibes, ranunculus are one of the most beloved spring blooms. They are often referred to as the "rose of spring." We realized very quickly that they are a bit of a high maintenance flower, but we didn't shy away from any of the divas this year. We currently have 1,100 ranunculus corms sprouting and they will be the first flowers to hit the soil in our brand new high tunnel this spring!
Icelandic Poppies – These whimsical blooms have delicate petals that look like they’re glowing when the sun hits them. Their citrusy colours and wild, fluttery style bring such joy to spring arrangements.
Stock – If you’re a fan of sweet smelling flowers, you’ll love stock. With its spicy, clove-like scent and soft, fluffy blooms, it’s a favourite for early-season bouquets. We will be planting these in our high-tunnel alongside our ranunculus to bring you the perfect spring market bouquet that is sure to satisfy your sight and smell.
EARLY SUMMER BLOOMS
As the weather warms, our fields begin to really come to life with texture, fragrance, and movement.
Snapdragons – These tall, cheerful blooms come in a rainbow of shades and add height and drama to any bouquet. Plus, they’re surprisingly long-lasting in a vase. We are planting rows of these in our field this year.
Larkspur – Lacy and romantic, larkspur brings soft height and movement to arrangements. Our varities are growing in shades of lavender, blush, and deep purple.
Delphinium – A true showstopper! These tall, stately blooms add elegance to any arrangement. Their rich blue tones are hard to find in the flower world, which makes them extra special.
Feverfew – Think mini daisies on airy stems. These sweet little filler flowers add a touch of whimsy and brighten up any bouquet. These are one of the fillers we are most excited to grow on the farm and our only regret is that we couldn't source as many of these beauties as we wanted. You'll be sure to see even more feverfew in our crop plan for 2026.
Bachelor Buttons – Also known as cornflowers, these wildflower style blooms are perfect for farm fresh flower market bouquets. All of our market bouquets will have a wildflower, farm bouquet feel, that you won't quite find anywhere else and these beauties were sure to make the cut. We’re growing shades of blue, pink, and white.
Phlox – These fragrant, soft blooms are a pollinator favourite and bring gentle texture and charm to early summer bunches.
SUMMER BLOOMS
When the heat arrives, the farm comes into full bloom and it’s going to be absolutely breathtaking. This is the point in the season where we will be opening our farm up to events on the farm.
Before we get into the summer blooms, take a minute to Imagine yourself walking through rows of farm fresh, locally grown flowers with your family picking your own flowers to bring home to brighten your living space. Or, enjoying a sunset picnic in the flower field with your partner.
It's going to be glorious! Keep your eyes peeled for our event dates.
Now, let's move on.
Lisianthus – Often mistaken for roses, lisianthus flowers have gorgeous, papery petals and a level of elegance that most other flowers don't. They take a while to grow, but once they bloom, they’re the crown jewel of any summer bouquet. We will be growing a small amount of these this summer so if you snagged a July bouquet subscription from our zone 3 garden, you'll get to experience the beauty of a lisianthus.
Zinnias – Quite possibly one of the most anticipated flowers on the farm - zinnias! Why? Because, they come in virtually every colour possible and if you look close enough, you might even spot a unicorn coloured one. They are bright, cheerful, and incredibly productive. Zinnias are the workhorses of summer. As mentioned, they come in every colour imaginable and they just keep blooming and blooming.
Sunflowers – Nothing says summer like a sunflower! We’re growing several varieties of sunflowers this year. You won't have a "traditional" sunflower on our farm this year. Be sure you will see a variety or two that you have never seen before. Each variety is pollen-less so you won't have to worry about it making a mess on your dining room table.
Dahlias – Our late summer showstoppers. With hundreds of petal shapes and sizes, dahlias are the drama queens of the flower world, and we love them for it. We’ll be planting over 1,000 tubers this year! Dahlias will be another diva in the flower field this year, but despite their high maintenance nature, there was no way these beauties could be left out. In fact, they are the flower that brought Franklin & Co. Flower Farm alive. You'll have a hard time picking your favourite variety this year with over 150 different varieties hitting the dirt this spring.
Strawflower – These papery, bright blooms hold their shape beautifully, even when dried. We use them in our farm fresh market bouquets and we may even save them for dried flower work in fall and winter.
Celosia – We are growing the flame shaped spires and leaving out the brain shaped, coral-like varieties this year. I can't quite warm up to the the brain shape celosia, but the flame shaped spires are showstoppers that add texture and bold colour to summer bouquets. We aren't growing anything else like it on the farm.
Cosmos – Light, airy, and graceful, cosmos sway with the breeze and bring a soft, romantic touch to the garden. Their cheerful blooms keep going well into fall. They come in many different colours, but we are most excited about the apricot varieties we have planned for this summer.
Eucalyptus – We’re trialing eucalyptus this year, hoping to bring that fresh, clean scent and signature silver foliage to bouquets. Fingers crossed they like our northern climate!
Astilbe – Soft, feathery plumes in pinks and whites, they are perfect for romantic, garden style bouquets. We love them as a filler flower that adds texture without stealing the spotlight and as an added bonus, they are a perennial in our zone 3 cut flower garden.
Foxglove – These tall, speckled bell-shaped blooms are magical in every way. They bring height, elegance, and a touch of woodland whimsy to arrangements.
Echinacea (Coneflower) – With their strong, daisy like petals and raised centres, echinacea is bold and beautiful. A favourite for pollinators and great for adding structure to bouquets. Another reason I love coneflowers? Yep, you guessed it! They're a perennial in our zone 3 cut flower garden.
Mrs. Burns Lemon Basil – This isn’t your regular basil! With a bright, lemony scent and delicate green leaves, it makes a refreshing, unexpected filler in bouquets and smells amazing. We currently have this growing in our Flower Shack and my goodness, it smells so good, already!
Every flower we grow has been hand selected for our farm. Each one with a story and a purpose from big, showy focal blooms to the humble fillers that tie it all together. And each one plays a role in the magic we create here at Franklin & Co. Flower Farm.
We can’t wait to fill your arms (and vases!) with our blooms this season. Make sure to follow along on Instagram or subscribe to our newsletter so you don’t miss a single stem!
Here’s to a season full of colour, scent, and beauty, straight from our field to you.
